Age Adjustment

10th Month Developmental Milestones

90% of babies can…

  • stand holding on to someone or something (No & No)
  • pull up to a standing position from sitting (No & No)
  • object if you try to take a toy away (Kate Yes; Carson No)
  • say “mama” or “dada” indiscriminately (Kate Yes; Carson No)
  • play peekaboo (not sure what they mean; they laugh when I do it with them)
  • exchange back and forth gestures (once again, not sure what they mean)

75% of babies can…

  • get into sitting position from stomach (No & No)
  • play patty-cake or wave bye-bye (No & No; Carson can give a “high-five” though)
  • pick up tiny object with thumb & finger (Kate No; Carson can pick up small banana puffs)
  • walk holding on to furniture (No & No)
  • understand “no” (No & No…not for lack of trying on our part though!)

50% of babies can…

  • stand alone momentarily (No & No )
  • point to something to get needs met (No & No)
  • say “mama” or “dada” discriminately (Carson No, but we think Kate has linked bottle with “baba” — which is what we’ve always called bottles)

I will skip the 25% of babies. No point.

8th Month Developmental Milestones

90% of babies can…

  • bear some weight on legs (Yes & Yes)
  • feed self a cracker (Yes & Yes)
  • look for dropped object (Yes & Yes)
  • rake with fingers a tiny object & pick it up in fist (Yes & Yes)
  • turn in direction of a voice (Yes & Yes)

75% of babies can…

  • pass an object from hand to hand (Yes & Yes)
  • stand holding on to someone or something (No & No)
  • object if you try to take a toy away (Kate Yes; Carson No)
  • work to get a toy out of reach (Yes & Yes)
  • play peekaboo (see above)
  • get into sitting position from stomach (No & No)

50% of babies can…

  • creep or crawl (No & No; but Kate is making progress)
  • pull up to a standing position from sitting (No & No)
  • pick up tiny object with thumb & finger (Kate No; Carson Yes)
  • say “mama” or “dada” indiscriminately (Kate Yes; Carson No)

25% of babies can…

  • play patty-cake or wave bye-by (No & No)
  • walk holding on to furniture (No & No)
  • stand alone momentarily (No & No)
  • understand “no” (No & No…they just laugh at us when we try)

I think I am hung-up on the sitting unsupported milestone. It concerns me that neither are doing it yet, and neither are even close to being able to do. We work every day with them (especially Carson), and there is no improvement. Apparently 75% of 7 month olds can sit unsupported. Sigh.

I remind myself how far they have come, how all the cards were stacked against them in the beginning, and all of that is very true. But my 20+ lbs baby boy isn’t sitting or crawling yet, and for some reason this concerns me. I’ve heard a dozen time, ‘They will develop in their own time’ — but at what point should I get concerned? When they reach a year old and they aren’t crawling or sitting? I honestly don’t know. My pedi doc isn’t much help either.

Okay, I know I’m just boo-hooing and being whiny. I’m just concerned and perhaps a tad hyper-sensitive.

In happier news…

Since the twins don’t have a wellness appointment for their 10th month, I took them in to get weighed anyway.

Carson is 20 lbs, 6 oz.

Kate is 15 lbs, 3 oz.

Weekend Update

  • Well, the twins and I survived Mark being gone for 2 nights. It really wasn’t too bad. The first night Kate slept 11 hours straight!
  • I found a beautiful place for my mom on the net. It made me happy that I could help her. She is moving December 28th.
  • How ’bout those Cowboys?! Wow. That was a nerve-racking, but thrilling game to watch.
  • Tomorrow will be a major house cleaning day for me. My good friend Donna is coming in on Wednesday. I am very excited!
  • I’m starting to toss around some ideas for the twins’ 1st birthday party in my bed already. Does this make me crazy? I have to send out the invitations the first week of January, so I guess it’s not too nuts to start thinking about it. Any ideas??
  • Our dog Schatzie finally has the cast and “lampshade” off her head.

An at-home photo shoot gone terribly wrong! Plus, it’s a bad photo anyway.
